Plan International and Maradeca Inc. in cooperation with the local government officials in three towns constructed and formally turned-over Women and Children Friendly Spaces in separate occasions within February-March 2018.
These safe spaces are located in the towns of Saguiaran, Marantao, and Piagapo, Lanao del Sur where a number of people in diaspora take temporal refuge with their relatives and in some established evacuation centers following the Marawi siege in May 23, 2017.
These facilities are part of the Marawi Displacement Response Early Recovery Phase for target beneficiaries.
It is hoped to provide a comforting spaces where women and children, being at the state of displacement, have spaces for open conversations and discourses to hopefully release tensions, regain hope, rebuild lost confidence, and help slowly recover normalcy from trauma.
“This facility is remarkable. It is very rare that women and children are given these special space where we can talk about our common issues and problems. We came to understand that this is important for us while we are in the evacuations. This help us a lot,” said Aisa, a mother and among the beneficiaries.
These facilities were turned over to barangay units where they are constructed with the commitment that these will be maintained and sustained as community facilities.
The respective ceremonial turn-overs were generously attended by civil society, local government officers, learners, women, and community leaders.
The establishment of said spaces also strengthened the partnerships between working and collaborating offices. (Faridah U. Salic
