The Maranao People Development Center (MARADECA) Inc in partnership with Catholic Relief Services (CRS) successfully conducted a Youth Camp cum leadership training on May 19-21, 2017 at Villa Lacida Resort, Linamon Lanao del Norte.

The 3-day activity aims to facilitate and support Peacebuilding efforts to promote better understanding among and between Muslims and non-Muslims. It targets to install mechanisms to reduce biases, discrimination and prejudice, and promote greater understanding between intra-group and inter-group members.

The youth camp included a cross visit to a peaceful Muslim-Christian Village in Tubod Lanao del Norte where it showcased the good and harmonious relationship of the two identity groups. The meetings were participated by 23 youth leaders coming from the Moro and Non-Moro sectors which were facilitated by MARADECA staff members Hanna O. Caunda, A3B Project Coordinator and Norliah B. Deron, A3B Training Officer/Community Organizer.

The three (3) day youth camp inspired the two groups to treat their different beliefs as tools for unity and not as hindrances to fall apart. The youth camp became the venue to set aside the issues regarding discrimination among and between religious affiliated identity groups that is now happening on the ground.

The youth camp became a venue to discuss how Muslims and non-Muslims can helped each other understand the true meaning of peace in Mindanao particularly in the various places where they came from.

The participants were able to enhance their skills to become a leader of their community in the future. The said camp was able to strengthen and develop the leadership skills of the youth leaders with regards to peace building activity and strengthen the relationship of the youth through peace building efforts.

One of the striking quote from Facilitator Hanna O. Caunda said that, “Anyone can be a leader but not all can be a good one”.
